Troy Nunes was injured on his last play of his career this Saturday against Miami. Nunes' career was full of ups and downs, but I think it should be remembered for him serving as a role model because of his heart and perseverance.
Nunes took the starting job from the great Donovan McNabb, and throughout his time as starter always had a backup trying to get his job. R.J. Anderson seemed to win the job last year, but Nunes' mettle and toughness got him elected captain his senior year. Nunes, who was booed when he replaced Anderson last year, came to the field amidst cheers on senior day.
He deserved all the cheers because he provided some of the greatest moments for Syracuse this season. These highlights included an amazing performance off the bench against Auburn, a 400-yard performance in the upset over Virginia Tech and a 3-2 record as a starter. Nunes unfortunately did not get to walk off the Carrier Dome turf on his own last Saturday, as he was helped off the field by trainers.
Nunes, I would like to say thank you for your amazing four-year career and best of luck in your future endeavors. Thanks for all the highlights, and in the heart of this fan, you will always be carried off as a hero who showcased what is right with a college football player by overcoming all the odds to succeed with heart and perseverance.
