As an active member of the Student Association, I feel that Thursday's D.O. editorial about the institution absolutely necessitates a rebuttal.
"The students also have a right to know what is going on in SA ...", reported Thursday's D.O. This notion is absolutely correct. Students absolutely do have the right to know what is going on in the student organization that governs them, which makes it even more disappointing when the school publication that is designed to inform them sloppily takes quotes and ideas out of context.
It is disappointing when the same school publication takes interest in SA, an organization that the D.O. has recently designated substantial import within the school, only at a point in which restructuring makes it unstable and vulnerable. The restructuring within SA has been designed to address the very issues that the D.O. has accused us of, and can only be successful with the support of the Syracuse University community. I have no doubt that would the D.O. properly address the context of the restructuring as well as the discussions and maxims of the Assembly Meetings, Travis Mason and his plan would be met speculatively, but with much optimism.
Something as important as the governmental system within a university cannot be argued tit for tat; it is degenerative and irresponsible for a university publication to initiate this type of scandal-mongering. To the writers at the D.O.: Do you really want to help ameliorate the governmental problems at SU?
Ask the hard questions. And when we answer, don't redesign what we've said.
