Here's what we're craving this week:
GO! Farmer markets in Waverly Parking Lot: Fridays 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Be sure to pop on by to support the local economy. We fell in love somewhere between listening to a cheese seller extol the virtues of aged cheddar, and finding a collection of homemade mushrooms made out of resin, that reportedly "give you, er, dreams of an adult nature..."
Funk 'n Waffles' Open Mic Night: Nothing says "college" more than camping out for three hours to watch your friends play a two-song set at the legendary Funk n' Waffles. Underground, indie with comfy chairs, coffee artwork, and did I mention fried chicken waffles?
Middle Eastern grocery stores: Right off campus, Samir's Imported Foods is family owned and operated. Try the homemade pita, or browse their extensive selection of hookahs at 811 East Genesee Street. Just don't fall in the olive bins!
Read! "The Lovely Bones": With Peter Jackson at the helm, there's no way this movie won't win Best Picture at the next Academy Awards. Start reading the book now (written by Syracuse grad Alice Sebold), watch the trailer through tear-blurred eyes and wait very impatiently for the film's debut in December.
Buy! Brita water filters: Stop buying Aquafina. Bottled water is the biggest marketing scam in history. You do realize you're paying for water, right? Water filters make tap water taste delicious, and they'll save you money in the long run.
Listen! "Young Forever" by Jay-Z: A new spin on the classic '80s slow-dance anthem. We're not really into hip-hop, but this song is a masterpiece. Request it at any gathering (parties, weddings, bar mitzvahs) and wait for the applause to begin.
Watch! "The Departed": Definitely a dorm room necessity. We have daily viewing parties on our floor with at least five or six guests. Paired with a Jack and Leo poster bought on Marshall Street, you've got yourself a crash pad even Costello himself would approve of.
Quote of the week: "I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me." - Jack Nicholson, "The Departed"
"What's the DL?" is written by freshman roommates Elizabeth Vogt and Durrie Bouscaren. Hailing from Houston, Texas, and Fort Collins, Colo., they love telling people what to do. If you've got an idea for a DL (music, books, movies, food, Syracuse events, general advice), feel free to send it in to Mailbox 57, Flint Hall.
