Nana Sang-Bender didn't get to choose which Pan Am Flight 103 victim to represent, but she found that she had things in common with him anyway.
"I am on the track team, and he also did cross country," she said of Thomas Schultz, the student she is representing during Remembrance Week.
Schultz was one of the non-SU students studying abroad through SU. He attended Ohio Wesleyan for history and politics and government.
Sang-Bender, a senior international relations major, said everyone at SU should know about the Pan Am tragedy, even though it was two decades ago.
"People don't know exactly what it is," she said. "But they are part of the Syracuse community and we are part of the SU community."
It was emotional to research Schultz and learn about the other college-aged students who died, she added.
"It means a lot to me, and it's important for people to know what happened," she said. "It could have happened to any one of us."
