A series of crimes took place during Halloween weekend, with four tickets issued on Halloween night, an assault on Saturday morning and a robbery Sunday morning, among others.

“Usually, if Halloween falls on a night that isn’t Friday or Saturday, for us it resembles a Friday or Saturday night,” said Department of Public Safety associate chief John Sardino said. “We see some increased activity, increased number of people walking around campus and through the East neighborhood.”

He added that there are usually more parties during Halloween because of the festive nature of the holiday, but that the crime during Halloween this year was typical compared to other years.

He also said that because of the rainy and windy weather on Thursday night, students were likely to spend less time outdoors, reducing the number of criminal incidents.

By Thursday night, four tickets were issued for violating city ordinances, Sardino said. One ticket was issued for littering, another for noise violations and two for violating a city nuisance priority ordinance, he said.

On Saturday, an SU student was punched in the face on the 700 block of Euclid Avenue at 1:45 a.m. The student was taken to the hospital and treated for facial injuries, Sardino said. Syracuse police then took over the investigation, he said.

An 18-year-old male non-student was arrested for assault charges afterward and arraigned at 9:30 a.m., police said.

A junior in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science was issued an appearance ticket for violating a city nuisance priority ordinance Saturday at 12:30 a.m. on the 300 block of Euclid Avenue. Violations included playing “unlawfully loud noise” and littering in neighboring properties, police said.

On Sunday, a student was robbed on Ostrom Avenue between Marshall and East Adams streets at about 2 a.m. The thief told the student he had a knife, stole the student’s wallet and keys and then fled into Thornden Park, DPS said.

Sardino said the University Area Crime-Control Team had been patrolling the area where the student was robbed. He advised students to take extra precautions outside.

“Students need to continue to be aware of their surroundings and take advantage of the campus shuttle bus service and DPS escorts when that’s applicable,” he said.

A senior in the College of Arts and Sciences was arrested for disorderly conduct on Sunday at 2 a.m. on the 600 block of Euclid Avenue.

During Halloween weekend, two tickets were also given for open container violations.

Sardino said these incidents were not unique to Halloween weekend.
