The Syracuse women’s soccer team opened its season Friday afternoon with a 0-0 tie against Missouri in the first game of the Penn State Invitational. Neither SU (0-0-1) nor Mizzou (0-0-1) was able to register a goal for the entirety of the double overtime match at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pa.

The Orange attempted 15 shots in the game, while the Tigers recorded 19. Sophomore Stephanie Skilton led the Orange with two shots on goal.

Missouri controlled the pace of the game early, shooting on goal three times within the first 11 minutes. The Orange defense did not give in, holding firm behind the goalkeeping of sophomore MacKenzie Moranz.

Syracuse tallied three total shots across the two overtime periods, struggling to create offense when it was needed late. 

To complement the stingy defense of both sides, the goalkeepers were outstanding. Moranz totaled five saves, while Missouri’s McKenzie Sauerwein also made five. 

The game marked Moranz’s first start in goal for the Orange, as she attempts to fill the void left by Brittany Anghel, who was a four-year starter and is a school leader in both wins (28) and shutouts (21). Moranz recorded the only save of overtime for either team to preserve the tie.

Syracuse accumulated seven offsides penalties throughout the game.

SU wraps up its action in the Penn State Invitational against Penn State on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
