Syracuse drops 5-setter to Georgia Tech after taking first 2 sets

After a promising start, Syracuse couldn’t hold off Georgia Tech.

SU (8-13, 1-8) beat Georgia Tech (10-12, 3-6) in the first two sets, 25-23, but dropped the next three 25-11, 25-20 and 15-10. After two Orange comebacks, the Yellow Jackets’ Teegan Van Gunst took over, tallying 27 kills.

In the first set, Georgia Tech jumped out to a 5-2 lead. Syracuse overcame a 17-12 deficit, rallying after a lackluster start. Silvi Uattara spiked a Gosia Wlaszczuk set to close out Georgia Tech.

In the second set, Georgia Tech again jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but this time, SU worked back from a 16-12 gap. Again, Uattara plucked a Wlaszczuk set out of the air and closed out the set.

But the next three sets belonged to the Yellow Jackets. After owning the third set 25-11, Georgia Tech and Syracuse played to a 14-14 tie in the fourth set. The Yellow Jackets ripped off three straight points and never looked back, stretching its lead to 24-18 and finishing the set 25-20.

In the fifth set, with Georgia Tech leading 14-10, Monika Salkute jumped for a spike from the right pin and knocked the ball into the net, finishing the set 15-10, and with it, the match.

The Orange returns to action at Louisville on Oct. 31.
