Looking to extend its four-game winning streak, No. 10 Syracuse (10-4, 1-4 Atlantic Coast) took to the road and lost to No. 13 Wake Forest (10-5, 3-2), 4-2, on Saturday afternoon.

The Orange pitted a hole for itself early, going down 2-0 after 24 minutes of play on  goals by Demon Deacons’ junior forwards Krysta Wangerin and Madi Julius.

SU emerged for its first goal of the day shortly after halftime when junior forward Emma Russell connected for her 10th of the season to cut the lead to one.

Wake Forest would counter just a minute later as sophomore midfielder Sarah Thornhill deflected a shot past Syracuse goalkeeper Jess Jecko to give the Demon Deacons a 3-1 advantage with 19 minutes remaining.

Standout freshman midfielder Lieke Visser countered with a deflected goal of her own to close the margin to 3-2 at the 62-minute mark, but it was a little too late.

Head coach Ange Bradley pulled Jecko from the goal in favor of an extra offensive player with four minutes remaining in the game. It proved to be a costly decision when Thornhill notched her second goal of the game to seal a 4-2 win.

The four goals for the Demon Deacons is the most Syracuse has allowed to an opponent this season. Additionally, the loss was the third for SU on the road and it places it further back in the ACC standings — as it remains the only one-win team in the conference.

Syracuse returns home next weekend to play its final two home games of the season against Duke (10-4, 2-3) and Bucknell (9-4, 4-0 Patriot League).
