SU goalie Alex Bono (25) confirmed Wednesday night that he accepted a Generation Adidas contract offer from Major League Soccer. He becomes the first SU soccer player to ever leave school early for MLS.

Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono has accepted a Generation Adidas contract offer from Major League Soccer and will be eligible for the upcoming MLS Draft, he confirmed in a text message to The Daily Orange on Wednesday night.

He becomes the first player in Syracuse soccer history to leave school early for the MLS. Others have left early to play in smaller leagues in Europe, according to SU Athletics, but Bono is the first to turn pro for MLS.

Generation Adidas contracts are only offered to college underclassmen, and Bono is one of four to accept a GA deal with the league. Connecticut’s Cyle Larin, Central Florida’s Romario Williams and Washington’s Cristian Roldan are the others.

Bono is coming off a season in which he garnered numerous awards, including Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-American and being one of three finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy given to the nation’s top player.

Bono’s departure leaves SU with one goalie on its current roster, freshman Pat Castle, and incoming freshman goalkeeper Austin Aviza, the 106th-ranked prospect in the class of 2019 by College Soccer News.

In an earlier version of this story, Austin Aviza was incorrectly called the 106th-ranked goalkeeper in the class of 2019. He is the 106th-ranked player by College Soccer News. The Daily Orange regrets this error.
