Animal expert shares wild life
Abstract:

Gday
Just a short note to advise on the current state of the dingo.
I have just read the article in the Daily Orange, on the internet, and was impressed by Jack Hanna's concern for the dingo. I have been keeping dingoes as a domestic pet for more than 30 years during which time I have been involved in attempting to have them listed as an endangered species.
In the State in which I live, Victoria, the dingo is listed as a pest animal, and is poisoned by aerial baiting with 1080 (sodium monofluoroacetate), and doggers are employed by Government to eradicate these animals from National Parks and State Forests.
Current research by Professor Chris Johnson et al and Chris Dickman shows that where dingoes exist in the eco system there are less introduced mesopredators (red foxes and feral cats and rabbits) and more of the small, and often endangered marsupials.
In the middle of 2006 I was privilaged to be present at a talk given by Professor Michael Soulé which he concluded by saying that if we (in Australia) did not want to loose more than 20 endangered small marsupials we must act to protect the dingo. He likened the role of the dingo in the Australian eco system to that of the wolf in Yellowstone National Park.
At present we have a nomination before our State Government to have the dingo listed as a threatened species and are hopeful that the nomination will be ratified by the responsible Minister.
Hope this is of some assistance to Jack Hanna and hope he keeps on with his good work.
