I commend the administration for looking at both women and men for the Dean position but after reviewing Dr. Steinberg's resume it looks a little weak. Public policy is not a background that I would list for and engineering Dean. Her intersts at a recent symposium were listed as "disaster management, risk assessment, critical infrastructure and environmental modeling". I don't see this as a strong engineering background. Were there not any candidates with stronger business ties or someone from one of the national labs? I would have preferred a Dean who would stengthen ties with industry and research organizations rather than collaborations with other schools and colleges. Graduates need jobs and its industry that will provide them. Maybe we can't attract a quality candidate at Syracuse. I hope the administration didn't start their search looking to fill a demographic. I wish the Dean well and hope she is successful in her new job.
