Beenie Man pays Marley tribute in concert

Abstract:
The stage, illuminated with red, yellow and green lights, provided a fitting backdrop to two DJs creating a grooving reggae soundtrack in the background. The crowd erupted into applause. Beenie Man's Syracuse University debut had begun.

As part of the Caribbean Students Association's Bob Marley tribute weekend, the sold-out "Hands in the Air" concert on Friday in the Schine Underground saw a variety of acts, including singers, dancers and, in some cases, both....

I am a jamaican graduate student here in Syracuse and I was real proud to attend last Friday's event. If for no other reason than to 'represent' and show support to this Jamaican artist. Beenie man is a consummate entertainer and almost always gives the crowd 'value for money' performances. I followed up keenly with the CSA since last year to find out this year's act. I was not disappointed. Despite there being a most unfortunate performance earlier in the night, it was generally a most entertaining night.

I noticed that your article did not include any reference to the fact that Beenie Man's lyrics endorse murder of gay men and women. Words such as "I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays" and "Hang lesbians with a long piece of rope" and "Take a bazooka and kill gay men" should not be celebrated at Syracuse or, indeed, anywhere.

Gay men and women are being murdered regularly in Jamaica and it is considered one of the most homophobic places on the planet. By allowing this man to promote his 'murder music' on campus, you participate in the death of gay men and women in the island nation.

Please take a moment to google Beenie Man or Jamaica and the word "gay". You will be horrified at what you just celebrated.

This was a great event to attend I had a great time. The soca artist OGTrini was very impressive especially for a new up and coming artist. I think he did a wonderful job. Its a shame that such a "reputable" website "Daily Orange" would get an artist's name wrong several times within one article. Someone clearly isn't taking their proofreading job too seriously. I think OGTrini did a fantastic job. Maybe next time when a article is written about him the proper credit will be given to him and him alone.
