Imagine...if athletes had to be as smart as the rest of us, do you think this crap would be happening as often?
Obviously this is what happens when sports and money trump academics. SU has lowered its standards too far: let them reap what they've sown.

Kaylen, I don't know where this animosity is coming from, but try not to be so condescending for a second. Look, Im sorry you got cut from JV basketball, got made fun of by the baseball team or your dad pushed you too hard in HS; but the truth of the matter is that good athletics is the best marketing tool a school can have. Win a national championship; the applications for admission go up by a third. That's 1/3 more qualified students to pick from. Look at all the positive exposure USC has been getting the last few years, it makes the alumni happy and they donate, programs get better and everyone else gets more fin aid.

As an athlete I resent your assertion that we are held to a lower standard. I got a 1400 on my SAT, but picked SU because of the opportunity to compete on the D1 level. I and several athletes I know are members of the honors program, and post solid GPAs. I take the same tests and classes as non athletes and do just as well. So there are a few student athletes who make bad decisions.

You seem like a pretty liberal kid. Would you throw out the welfare system because there are some who abuse it? I knew a woman who collected welfare and disability, all the while working a cash job and living in a 300K house. Is the system to blame or is she Kaylen?

And I wouldn't say they are not held to a lower behavioral standard. The kids got arrested for something they did in their own practice facility. Those are some high standards.

Think of how many smart, intelligent, hard-working people could be educated for the amount of money this college pours down the drain of its sports programs. First and foremost a university is a place of higher education; the tradition of sports results in not just a healthy mind but also body. But it has become a distraction from the university's primary goal, to educate us. They don't even do that as well as they should.
Now sure, you may very well be as smart as you say you are. Exceptions can always be found. But my point is that student athletes are held to a much lower standard than the rest of us. How often are our distinguished athletes seen repeating classes, failing out of college, having to spend extra semesters...How often are they involved in something stupid like this?
And how often do they win?

I like how you relate the sports program to welfare; the system is indeed broken.

How about building that brand-new multi-million dollar 'Melo gym up here on north campus so the rest of us can use it?

Its wrong to say intelligent athletes are the exception, I know first hand its the other way around. As I said before, student athletes take the same exams as everyone else and have the same requirements to graduate. Some may have lower gpa's but if you traveled and represented the university as much as we do, you would consequently miss classes. There are plenty of non athletes who are under qualified and go to SU. Most of them dont get DO coverage. Over half the kids from my freshman orientation class are not in the program anymore. You dont hear about them because no one cares if they fail out or transfer. This article shows graduation rates are comparable for athletes and students.

So it is unfair to judge the entire athletics system because a few people misrepresent its intentions.

The other point I wanted to make and you missed was the incredible marketing tool a sports team can be for a school looking to raise its funds upwards of a billion dollars. Even if Carmelo Anthony didn't graduate, he still went here. Now every time he is on television, has a new sneaker out or wins, Syracuse will be associated with that. The exposure it gets is far beyond what the university lost in him not graduation. It is a celebrity endorsement for SU.

It is even more true for football, the biggest sport in America, in which a bowl game translates to millions of dollars for the school, as well as happy alumni, which God willing, you will be one day; at which time the school will try and appease you too. Happy alumni support a 1Billion fund raising campaign.

Now lets consider that Carmelo was a 40K investment, who just donated 3M to the school. How much of a return is that?

The 'Melo center is going to be 2 basketball courts. There are 4 courts in Arch that go unused, plus no room to build more on North as you suggested.

Everyone knows Syracuse is a school with a rich athletic tradition, that it is a part of the community here, and it prides itself on that. The city rallies around the teams, turning out in thousands for games. If we stopped trying, SU would further separate itself from the Syracuse community, which is contradictory to the schools intentions. You cant argue with the schools history. If you dont support its current position, you can bitch and moan about how SU loves its athletes and no one ever loved you all you like, but youre not going to change its position.

Im not going to get into a pissing match with you, nor do I care how you respond (Im not going to read it). At the end of the day, regardless of what you say on a student newspaper message board, people are still going to turn out and support the teams. And just like any other day, no one is going to care who you are and what you have to say.

Ryan you an absolute idiot. I bet your not playing a damn thing in this school. YOur a dweeb and a reject. THat broad made sense in everything she said, you know it as well as everyone else. If two other students that were not athletes did that, chances are they are out the school. So shut up and behave yourself.

This is so awkward... what the heck were they thinking?? And the funny thing about it, this is not the first time that happened. Infact Ive read this happened before...even with the LAx team. What the hell must be in this equipment room...a pot of gold?

These two drunking idiots certainly were lacking self control and were bored. What they both need is the embarrasment (in the Daily"O"Negative publicty) of their stupid actions, make payments to repair the damage, then perfom some kind of public service to reinforce their public image,to whats left to it.
