Female priest's views differ from mainstream Christian values

Abstract:
Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows is a priest - but not just any old, stereotypical priest. She's black, a female and is a certified preservationist. She also supports abortion.

"The Bible doesn't say anything about abortion," said Baskerville-Burrows, the Episcopalian chaplain at Hendricks Chapel and the priest at Syracuse's Grace Church....

As an Episcopal priest and a female, I find The Rev. Baskerville-Burrows' comments on the Bible, abortion, and the Episcopal Church rather disingenuous -- if they are being reported accurately. Even though the Bible doesn't mention abortion specifically, it does include, as a major theme running through it, the sacredness of life, and human life in particular. Human beings are made in the image of God. Our value comes from God our Creator and Redeemer. David, the psalmist, writes in the beautiful Psalm 139:
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book.

We are given freedom to choose, as human beings, but as Moses tells the people of Israel in Deuteronomy 30, when he asks them to renew their covenant with God:

19 This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Finally, while I do not agree with the legislative stand on abortion the Episcopal Church has chosen to take (and there are many other Episcopalians who do not agree with the official stand), see General Convention Resolution 1994-A054 (http://www.episcopalarchives.org/cgi-bin/acts_new/acts_resolution-complete.pl?resolution=1994-A054)
to see how very seriously the resolution takes the tragedy of abortion. What Sarah Reks has to say about a woman dealing with the question of abortion herself and in her relationship with God is not the full story, according to the Episcopal Church (and the Church universal, historically): church members and especially the clergy are directed to offer positive alternatives to abortion with great seriousness -- and I would add, with great compassion!

This is an excerpt from the Bible, King James version:
"If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life"

FYI:

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, is opposed to abortion; he uses an interesting and subtle argument that has to do with a critique of consumer choice and rights claims, issues related to abortion in our Western culture. See:

Also, there is an Episcopal/Anglican organization that promotes life. It's called NOEL. See: http://www.noelforlife.org/index/
