All For Student Athletes

posted 4/22/08 @ 8:09 AM EST

Recently it appears that the athletic department is de-emphasizing academic performance. Since January, there has not been a weekly "Scholar Athlete of the Week" on the athletics page. Instead, there is this superficial poll of athletes on their "favorites" that has seemed to become a fixture. I feel this makes a disappointing statement about where Syracuse Athletics is headed.

Asante made the right decision. It is unfortunate that so many other athletes see Universities as a mere stepping stone to the pros. For those of us who intimately know athletes that participate in Olympic sports, their focus is the combination of academics and athletics. THIS is the mission of the NCAA, and should be re-captured by Division 1 University athletics as well.
