FB | No SU players picked in draft for 1st time since '75

Abstract:
Jameel McClain kept looking at his cell phone Sunday evening, hoping the call he was waiting for would come in.

While the final rounds of this weekend's NFL Draft unfolded on television, the former Syracuse defensive end fielded calls from several pro teams about his availability as a free agent....

What a sad state the Syracuse football program is in. Didn't we have a streak that started in the 90s and went until Freeney was drafted in 2002 of at least one SU player going in the first round? Now we cannot even get one of our players picked in any round! In the last 33 years we've had some bad seasons, but we've at least had one player good enough to be one of 200+ picks in the NFL Draft. Now we cannot even get that. I'm sorry Greg Robinson, but if you cannot win 6 games this year you should be history. Then we should bring someone in who knows how to recruit potential NFL talent and has coached before.

I hope Donte Greene also goes undrafted. $100 says Taj Smith will have a better NBA career than Greene. Seriously, what is Taj thinking. Maybe he should star in Van Wilder: The Return of Taj 2. Where's Johnnie Morant nowadays? I remember sippin margaritas from the O-Zone and then hitting the Phi-Psi frosh drunkards. Triple lutz for the GOLD!

I know that some equate Smith's decision to turn pro with Greene's. I do not and wish Taj, well as a signed free agent with Green Bay.

If he decided to return to SU in the fall, he'd be a fifth year senior in his mid twenties with a degree already in hand and nothing to do between games but watch Regis and Kelly on TV and work out.

Would another humilating year under Coach R. have made a big difference for Taj or for the program. Probably not. He would have risked injury for himself and reduced the playing time for and development of another young player, who might benefit the team much more when they are ready to make some noise. Sorry - I don't see that much improvement in 2008.

Dante Greene is a entirely different matter. I'm heartsick over his departure. Coach B - please, don't get us any more kids that really wanted to play for another school (Georgetown) or are antsy to get out of SU after a year or two. You lucked out with 'melo (winning in '03), but most do us no favors and are wasting everyone's elses time for selfish reasons. It's very disappointing.

Pasqualoni and DeLeone are to blame. Garbage play calling, garbage player development and garbage recruiting. Where's coach Mac??????

Thats the way it should be. YOu cant reward losing. It simply makes no sense. They sucked bad meaning they team sucked bad meaning the players sucked bad and what nfl team wants a bad player? Im surprised both of them even got called for F.A. Just a bunch of bad players playing for a bad coach. If you think about it only a bunch of rejects would go play for a loser program. Top recruits wont go to syracuse and belittle themselves thus only the rejected players come to cuse to play.

Coach Mac was a joke. Without Donny MacPherson's winning seasons followed by the one from Philcox; the couch would have had a losing record at SU. Coach Mac was stumbling old fool that started the slide downward. Remember Mac is the one who brought Pasqualoni to Syracuse.

Call me uninformed, but I was kinda shocked to know a few days back that Syracuse football was the 14th best program in the country if you look at win%.

You wouldnt have guessed that looking at our record in the past 4-5 years.

We'll be back though.
