FB | McCullough: For Syracuse football, nothing but sadness left
Abstract:
PISCATWAY, N.J. - Scenes from the aftermath of one sad Saturday in Central New Jersey:
* A downtrodden Cameron Dantley mumbling that he hadn't thought about being benched during his dismal performance in a 35-17 loss to Rutgers: "I was just trying to do the best I could to help us down the field....

the sadness started with Nancy Cantor's stupid decision to hire an AD with no familiarity with anything East of the Mississippi, other than slurping BBQ Sauce on nat'l TV. She hired a flim flam who claimed to be instrumental in recruiting one of the most important Football Coaches in America who proceeded top rebuild Univ So. Calif. That hire fell into his lap. Recruiting out there is easy, not difficult. At Syracuse he's made claims about facilities -- when kids are more attracted to the coach -- not the building. Bull puckey ! Sad s that the current coach was not qualified for his current role ! NFL does not necessarily work in NCAA. Out-of-region Coordinators do not instantly become credible recruiters with prep coaches never met before. Game planning all sides of the ball does not emerge in the brain -- especially if one is DOA. The Denver Broncos insist GRob was a dead man walking when Elway retired. Did Daryl Gross speak to ANY Broncos ? NO !!
Fire the AD and start from there, then you'll get results !!. The poor players are being emotionally abused by Daryl BBQ Gross -- truly Piled High & Deep.

This is no time to be sad an impressed. On Saturday, Syracuse will play one of the most important games in recent memory - Connecticut. The NY Times recently proclaimed that Connecticut program has already surpassed Syracuse's. That's like spitting on the sports memories of Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Larry Czonka, Joe Morris and Donovan McNabb and many other greats who were playing this game when Connecticut was just a place to go to look at old whaling ships and retired frigates!
Our guys really have to reach back and - I hate to use this word in this way - "upset" Connecticut, which is only a 10 point favorite. Rutgers was favored by 14 and we realized how generous the oddsmakers were to us by game's end.
If we are able to put Connecticut away, we just may give Randy Edsall a better reason to consider
coming here and thinking he has a little something to work with - a few worthwhile players to build around and some fans that still care about SU football.
PLEASE, guys - win this one - for yourselves. For your pride. And, to help you get a better coach for next year.

It's a shame. We all know that Syracuse has had an illustrious past filled with great success. Not that long ago, either. It's possible for the team to find their footing again, but not with that AD or that head coach.
In this day and age, where coaches are paid quite a lot of money to provide results or get out, it's amazing that Robinson has lasted this long (think Ron Prince at Kansas State who hasn't even finished his third season and has already been asked to leave). And, the contract extension is truly puzzling. I would have to say that neither the coach or the AD is able to offer Syracuse what they really need. And, I just don't see success coming Syracuse's way unless there is a serious change to both.
As for Rutgers (my alma mater), people didn't seem to mind when he only posted a handfull of wins in his first several years. Mostly because there had been so little success for the program since the '70s (when they were playing mostly Ivy League games). But Syracuse? It's like taking something that was working fine and breaking it. Putting those pieces back together will, certainly, not be easy.
