Gov. Eliot Spitzer sparks the wrong kind of change

Abstract:
"On Day 1, Everything Changes." New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer echoed these words non-stop on the campaign trail in 2006. Now, with his first year as governor behind him, Spitzer can honestly say he truly did bring change. However, it's not change he should be too proud of....

Another excellent column from Mr. Napolitano. Governor Spitzer's shortcomings have been many, and this has been a true disappointment for Democrats and Republicans alike.

Sadly, his 69% capture of the vote allowed him to trample over the people with his ego-driven power trip. Luckily, only 25% of the state would currently vote to re-elect, as was reported in the cited Siena College poll. At least New Yorkers are obviously paying attention!

LOVE the column! Eliot Spitzer really has proven that "change" should NOT be enough to win an election. Change does not imply a warm, fuzzy new wave of ideas, but it could. People need to look at the past policies, votes, ratings, and/or records of these candidates BEFORE they vote. Otherwise, more Eliot Spitzers and Deval Patricks (Gov of Massachusetts) will sweep in on "change" and just destroy the state with their far-left plans.

Viva Vinny! Another incredible and true column. People like Spitzer are dangerous to America, and use their powers to get a stranglehold on the state (like with Troopergate in the summer). Let's hope America doesn't make another mistake like this clown!

Refreshing take on the Governor's performance. Very good column! Spitzer only cares about special interests that help him, like Planned Parenthood or the AFL-CIO, and ignores doing the real work a Governor should be doing.

I hope people take him to task for breaking his "no raising taxes" promise come 2010, and hope NY is smart enough to just say no to people who promise empty change as their only campaign point!

As an older woman, I can say fully that Governor Spitzer has caused me and my husband nothing but harm. We both cast our ballots for him and his message of change, his promises of a better life for senior citizens, and his promise to fix the budget issues of the state. On a fixed income, he has cost us to dip further into our pockets, and now he wants to take away our religious freedoms as well (my husband has practiced as an OB-GYN for over 40 years and opposes this abortion plan. He never performed one, and never will). Bless you for speaking truth.

Thank you so much for your article on Dr. "Change Love," Eliot Spitzer. He will go down as one of the worst governors in the history of New York state, running the state like a liberal elitist country club rather than the mix of ideologies and religions that it is. No ethics, no morals, no cuts in spending... There's your change you can believe in.

Spitzer broke the promises he made and then some. Shame on him and his administration. They are the reason I will vote Republican in 2008 even though I have been a lifelong Democrat.

Very good op-ed! I think Vinny is right on the mark with this one. Spitzer ignores the people with each policy he passes, and wants to turn NY into the new Massachusetts - God forbid!

Keep speaking out against him and let him know he can't keep silencing the voice of the people! I may be a Democrat, but Spitzer goes WAY too far! This fall, I am voting for the Republican for the state Senate race in my district to stop him from complete state power- and proudly.

Very well said Vinny! I think Governor Spitzer's example of change should put up a red flag to those who are considering voting for "change" in the 2008 presidential election. Higher taxes, abandoning Iraq, and government-run health care isn't going to be a positive change.

I'm addicted to these columns... They speak truth in such volumes to young conservatives who are trapped around liberal spin every day!!

Spitzer is a mess. He has destroyed the great Empire State with his failed policies, and forced his own uber-liberal ideological ideas down the throats of the masses.

Stand-up to bullies like him - everyone should follow Vinny's example here!!

Just another column to add to Vinny's awesome list. Never commented before, but love reading them. I hope he keeps going with them. Spitzer has been a DISASTER. Because of him and his liberal cronies, I had to move out of New York into Pennsylvania for tax reasons, and now my commute is the reason I don't get to see my kids when they get up in the morning, when they have dinner, when they need help with homework.. NY Democrats, ruining the lives of the working family.

I agree about Mr. Spitzer hurting people in our state. He just thinks we are made of money!

If people like him keep this up, we may lose our home.

I am a lifelong Democrat voter, but in 2008, because of Obama and Clinton promising to get rid of the Bush tax cuts that helped my family get by, I am voting for John McCain. I need to do what is best for my family, and the Democrats abandoned us.

Now people like him and Barack Obama and their fellow Democrats seek to plunder my hard-earned cash to pay for ILLEGAL immigrants!

This is not the American dream I signed up for. When I was 16 and came here without a penny to my name, I worked to belong. I came legally. What you are trying to do is not right, Mr Spitzer, not right at all.

The many posts stating that "Spitzer is the reason why I'm voting republican" are proof that people have gotten themselves way too wrapped up in party lines and not the record, ideas, or agendas new candidates provide during election season.

Yes, I hate the way Spitzer has conducted himself. And yes, I consider myself a moderate democrat, but I'd rather see the candidates for what they stand for than base one idiot governor on an entire political party or use it as a justification of voting blindly for another candidate of the opposing side.

What I feel was failed during Spitzer's campaign was that voters did not take into account what this guy was truly all about, and now NY state is paying for it. We need to really understand who we are voting for, not just what party they belong too.

I agree. I don't think they are all simply saying that, though. Many Democrats, like myself, look at the tax issue as a huge thing right now in New York. On the fact my family is struggling, I need to elect tax-cutters. Sadly, the Democrats refuse to call for a tax cut for my family. Why? Because by their definition, we are "upper-class". Well, a combined income of $140,000 with 3 kids in $40,000 per year colleges with 2 other kids in high school doesn't exactly prove that I am upper-class to me! I do hope people look at the issues... Unfortunately, if economic security is the issue, the Democrats have lost their way.
