The smoking room

Abstract:
In a small bowling alley, in between frames, Niko Rechul and Mikhail Marinovich decided that it would be cool to open a hookah bar on Marshall Street.

That meeting took place this past summer. Now, almost three months later, the two Syracuse University students - both players on the SU football team - are preparing for tonight's grand opening of Hollywood Hookah, their smokehouse brainchild....

Because this is what our football team should be doing. Not concentrating on winning games, but opening a place to welcome tobacco. Awesome.

Hookahs are terrible for your lungs.

No wonder the teams looks so sluggish on gameday.

The real story? Two football players are trying to get SU students addicted to smoking tobacco, which causes cancer. The water in a hookah does not filter out the carbon monoxide, tar, and nicotine from the smoke. In fact, according to U.S. News and World Report, "a water pipe smoker may inhale as much smoke during a single hookah session as a cigarette smoker would inhale by blazing through 100 cigarettes." And sharing the mouthpiece of a hookah can spread herpes. Why is the Daily Orange publicizing the "cool factor" of smoking hookahs and not the dangers? These guys are using flat screen TVs, comfy furniture, and funky flavor to lure you into something as risky as cigarette smoking.

Why don't you let people decide that for themselves. There is a smoking age, 18. A bar lures people in everyday and drinking isnt healthy by any means. If people want to cheif down cigs or smoke a hookah, let them. They know of the dangers, they are college students.

And if the lounge was a cigarette lounge? Would the D.O. promote a place like that? Would a place like that even succeed, nevermind even exist? What makes Hookah acceptable, and cigarettes not?

P.S. The timing for this GRAND opening couldn't have come at a better time. Next Thursday is the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout campaign. Visit cancer.org/GreatAmericans to learn exactly how the DECISION you make to smoke tobacco can ruin your life.

WOW, hello haters. Give these kids credit for starting up something like this. Yeah, tobacco's not the greatest thing in the world, but give businessmen the respect they've clearly earned. Best of luck guys!

I'm sorry, but I don't see how anyone can RESPECT someone who sells tobacco for a living. Do you have respect for Big Tobacco company CEOs? Are they good businessmen, perhaps. But do they deserve RESPECT? I don't think so.

Is the irony of this lost on you?

This is an oh so shining example of the sparkling recruits Greg Robinson has loaded your football team with. You know, the one that averages two wins a year?!?!?

Businessmen? Sure, they are business men. They used thousands of dollars of their families money. College kids starting a bar with FLAT SCREEN tvs and only the highest quality product?

Well if they CAN'T succeed, they are stupid.

Maybe they should be focusing on their conditioning and doing hill sprints instead of destroying their lungs.

You guys are all idiots. Did you ever think that maybe they are NOT smoking. Clearly the hookah in the picture is not lit.
Also, maybe notice that the kicker averages about 69 yards a game kicking off and the other guy is a back up.

I agree, smoking is not good but we are young and we can have some fun and of course some business thinking spirit cannot hurt the economy.

My question is this: how did they raise the capital to rent space and fill it with the high quality toys mentioned in the article? Did they actually act as businessmen and raise the capital or just simply use their own (their families') money? Before we give credit where credit's due, Smith, let's see if the credit for these "businessmen" is actually deserved.

Poor reporting on the part of the DO. This reads simply as a two page advertisement for their place.

No one that plays for Syracuse should be out until 2am opening a bar two nights before the last home game. This is an absolute joke and epitomizes what is wrong with Syracuse football.

Unbelievable -- these free-ride student athletes -- supposed to be conditioned, are smoking, and worse from pipes known to be synonymous with "Mary Jane" .. No coach nor Athletic Director in their right minds want this association with their program. Time to fire both Daryl Gross and Coach Robinson. What a pair of jerks !

Hey Ch. Cantor, this just might be what topples over your flippin' chair. We knew your boys would make a fatal error. Now we got it. Call the cops !!

Todd Marinovich was not exactly a high character athlete .. Why did Syracuse recruit the younger brother ? Probably another Daryl Gross connection to Univ of So. Calif.

Thank you Dr. Gross for more of your superb screw ups. Qualified to be an AD ? We all know better. You are a full-fledged fraud. Your inflated CV is NOW well-vetted.

You and your coach need to go. If you care to take your boss, the chancellor, we Syracuse alums would be delighted and sincerely cheer her departure too.

I find that its an insult to link a hookah and dope while yeah its is done, it does not mean everyone uses it to smoke marijuana, many marijuana smokers detest Tobacco and if prepared properly the bad effects of smoking can be reduced by a great amount

And Anyway A Smart Businessmen Knows How To Make Money, people should know the risks by now and if people insist on smoking there is no one but themselves to blame

I for one think that these guys should get the credit they really deserve for putting this together. The amount of work and dedication that goes into college alone is more than most college students can handle. On top of that, they've opened a lounge. I say bravo, br-*uckin-vo. And by the way, if someone has a way to contact these guy, preferably email, pass it along. I'd like to get a few secrets out of em.
