Best Week Ever - Cutting classes and making the cut

1. GREG ROBINSON, TICKING TIME BOMB
Never has the phrase "working under pressure" been given more meaning. Syracuse University head football coach Greg Robinson sits on the hot seat as the football season kicks off this weekend. As if simply knowing that his job might be on the line isn't enough, the concept has been published and republished, then broadcasted again. With all eyes on him this week, practically everyone is holding their breath and crossing their fingers. But despite the dismal predictions, let's not count the team out; even the Giants beat the Patriots.

2. BIRD LIBRARY ON 7-11 STATUS
The library is now officially open 24 hours a day. For anyone who has the 3 a.m. bug to crack open a book, Bird is there for them. This is great, but the question remains -who will be in Bird Library between the hours of 3 and 6 a.m.? What type of students will be hidden inside the cubicles? What are their majors? Where do they live and why aren't they there sleeping? A 24-hour Bird Library will expose a whole new breed of student: the Night Owl.

3. SUNY-ESF GETS CUT
This year, students from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry found themselves shut out from taking elective SU classes, which have previously been available to them. Way to draw the lines of segregation. Even though we are two separate schools, the beauty of the ESF/SU relationship was that both schools were able to cohabitate, sharing everything from Lawrinson Hall to CENTRO bus routes. Shutting out the students from classes is practically having them wear a tree on their forehead. Surely there were other programs that could've been cut instead.

4. DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION
General idea: we were all poor - now we're all rich, so cast your vote! The Democratic National Convention excited Democrats and attempted to bridge the gap between Clintonites and Obama supporters. While all in attendance were seemingly happy and excited, supporters and non-supporters alike must now wait to see if the hopeful, emotion-filled speeches did the trick.

5. THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF HURRICANE KATRINA
Three years ago, Hurricane Katrina destroyed the Gulf Coast, leaving millions displaced and homeless. The sloppy, delayed response by local and federal governments further crippled the situation. Since then, recovery missions in New Orleans and surrounding areas have turned the situation around, showing the great degree of change a group of people can bring. However, two impending hurricanes this week - Gustav and Hanna - threaten the progress that has been made and have the potential to wreck the dreams of many people in "The Big Easy."
