Syracuse University hired two new deans since students departed for Spring Break.
Ann Clarke, associate dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was promoted to dean Friday by Vice Chancellor and Provost Eric Spina.
Lorraine Branham, director of the journalism school at University of Texas at Austin, was named dean of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications on Wednesday.
Branham will begin her position July 1, when current dean David Rubin steps down after 18 years. Clarke will immediately secede Carole Brzozowski, who was appointed to the newly created position of university performing arts presenter at SU on Jan. 25.
The news comes less than a month after Syracuse filled the first of its five dean openings in 2008. Elizabeth D. Liddy was appointed dean of the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University on Feb. 13. The College of Arts and Sciences and the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science are still searching for new deans.
SU's administration originally planned an internal dean search to find Brzozoski's successor. But after students and faculty voiced their concerns, Spina announced on Feb. 7 that the next dean would an internal candidate with a national search to follow starting in Sept. 2009.
Clarke was chosen out of four candidates in VPA, which also included Joseph Downing from the Setnor School of Music, Kendall Phillips from the department of communication and rhetorical studies and Tom Sherman, from the department of Transmedia.
Clarke has worked at SU since 1998 in the Department of Art in VPA. In 2005, she was appointed chair of the department, rising to the role of associate dean of the visual arts in 2007. Clarke, who has worked on numerous creative projects in the Syracuse community, holds a bachelors degree in painting and printmaking from the University of Michigan and a master of fine arts degree in textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Braham has held the position of dean at UT since 2002. In her career as a journalist, she's held various editorial positions at The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Tallahassee Democrat, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Philadelphia Tribune, and The Baltimore Sun. She holds a bachelor's degree in television, radio and film from Temple University.
Branham was the only remaining candidate for the deanship after Samuel L. Grogg, the dean of the communications school at the University of Miami, withdrew his candidacy for the position on Feb. 8.
According to an SU news release, Branham was chosen out of 300 nominations and 60 applicants in the seventh-month search to fill the position.
Branham visited SU on Jan. 29 to meet with faculty and students, where she discussed issues of diversity and media convergence.
