SU students with physical disabilities face various policy, logistical problems

Syracuse University, sometimes referred to as the "Hill" because of its steep topography, is a routing dilemma for students with disabilities, especially when snow and ice cover the winding paths. "I know they shovel, but I'm nervous of having an accidental ride from hell down one of the ramps," said April Coughlin, a graduate student in broadcast journalism who goes from class to class in a wheelchair.

Officers arrest man with $20,000 worth of cocaine

Police arrested Shawn Nicol, 23, of 909 Comstock Ave., after finding more than $20,000 worth of cocaine in the apartment. Police were investigating a fatal drug overdose Sunday morning at Nicol's residence when they found the cocaine, according to a report by Syracuse's WSTM-TV 3.

Candidates compete in district attorney race

For the past 12 years, Onondaga County District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick has run unopposed. For lucky number 13, however, he has a challenger. The opponent, Democratic candidate Vanessa Bogan, believes Onondaga County needs a change. She cites allegations of a rift between Fitzpatrick and the Syracuse Police Department, the need for a resolution to youth and gang violence and the aggressive prosecution of sexual offenders as a platform to challenge the incumbent Fitzpatrick.

Students consider next step in response to blackface costume

For the third time this semester, the Syracuse University community is responding to a major bias-related incident, this time involving a student who dressed in blackface on Halloween. Department of Public Safety officers investigated reports Friday night of a bias-related incident involving a State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry student dressed in a racially insensitive Halloween costume, university spokesman Kevin Morrow said.

CMS employees unsuccessful in installation of SPAM guard, new server due to time constraints

Orangemail users who were expecting to be relieved of SPAM, failed logins and e-mail delays last week will have to continue to endure such annoyances because the new server designed to combat the problems experienced difficulties during installation. University officials recently purchased a new server and a SPAM filter called Brightmail in an effort to combat the many viruses and high levels of SPAM that have been circulating through the school's e-mail service.

Officers investigate unusually high number of fire alarms in Brewster, Boland

Freshman Evan Schreiber had a long day. The entrepreneurship and television, radio and film major had worked hard preparing for both an exam and a paper due at 8:30 a.m. the next day. The last thing he needed was to be disturbed. But at about 4 a.m., the shrill sounds of a fire alarm woke him up and forced him and his roommates out onto the patio of Brewster and Boland residence halls at Syracuse University.

Student posts racially insensitive song lyrics on residence hall door

Officers responded to a bias-related incident at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Marion Residence Hall, according to a Public Safety report. The investigation revealed that a student wrote and posted bias-related lyrics on a student's door, the report stated. An unidentified person shot paintballs at a resident's door at about 11 a.
