National Lampoon's Thanksgiving special falls short

Thanksgiving came a week early last night. Yesterday, members of Syracuse University's chapter of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club along with the Bishop Foery Foundation sponsored the free 14th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Southwest Community Center on South Avenue in Syracuse.

Comedian and University of Pennsylvania graduate Aaron Karo - the self-proclaimed guy who "wrote the book on college" - is performing at Syracuse University on Dec. 1. Karo, who is just two years out of business school, is the author of "Ruminations on College Life," a book detailing the hilarious exploits of his four years at Penn.

If your idea of a Thanksgiving feast includes dried-out turkey, cold mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce straight out of the can, then you might find something to chuckle at in "National Lampoon's Thanksgiving Reunion," a film starving for laughs. With a title and premise designed to remind viewers of "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," this made-for-TV movie - set to debut on TBS this Sunday - is a disgrace to the memory of that holiday classic.

Former teen heartthrob bid fond farewell

I was a geek in junior high. While the cool kids were hanging out in front of the movie theater or congregating at the mall, I spent my Friday nights developing a huge adolescent crush on Jonathan Brandis while watching episodes of "SeaQuest DSV." That's why it comes as such a shock to hear the news that Brandis, who also appeared in childhood movie classics "Ladybugs" and "Sidekicks," has died at age 27 from a possible suicide.
