Comptroller case stalls SA budget

As student groups eagerly wait for decisions by the Student Association on their funding for next year, the Judicial Review Board's decision to halt the budget process is becoming increasingly controversial. Calling the funding freeze "outrageous," a former Student Association parliamentarian, David Panetta, challenged the authority of the JRB to halt finance board hearings as charges are heard against Comptroller Maggie Misztal, who leads the finance board.

Coasters help fight date rape

With statistics from Syracuse University's Rape Advocacy, Prevention and Education Center showing that every two minutes nationwide a woman is raped, companies are developing products to help women protect themselves. In 2002, Drink Safe Technologies, an Alabama-based company, developed the Drink Safe Coaster, which can help women detect drugs that may have been slipped into their drinks. The coasters, measuring four square inches, have two small circles. By placing a drop of the drink onto one of the circles, women can detect the presence of GHB and Ketamine, two of the three most commonly used drugs in incidents of date rape.

Federal plan raises fears about privacy

The federal government has taken a cue from reality TV à la "Big Brother" by suggesting to follow each student through his or her college years. A recent proposal suggesting the creation of a national database with detailed records of individual student enrollment, graduation and financial aid information, tracked by social security numbers in all universities and colleges, is raising concerns about the invasion of student privacy.
