Give 'em the boot

Critics call them hideous and unwearable. Detractors always say they've earned the name Ugg boots because they're ugly. And, they're right - sort of. The word "Ugg" actually does come from the Australian abbreviation for "ugly," sometimes spelled as "Ug" or "Ugh.

First day of class introductions always stressful; best to just make things up

Though this is my final go-around for "first days" in college, the procedure hasn't gotten any easier. For some reason, the small ritual that is the introduction scares the bejeesus out of me. I can get in front of a crowd of 100 people and (try to) tell jokes, but saying my name in front of 15 strangers is simply terrifying.

Ugg's succinct and descriptive name almost didn't make it to the States. The term "Ugg" was used traditionally to refer to any boot lined with sheepskin. This followed a technique that began when shearers in Australia would wrap sheepskin around their feet to keep warm .
