'It's a whole new season'

Eager to prove itself, SU's offensive line gets first test Saturday

By John Clayton

Ryan Durand is tired of being asked about it. About the 54 sacks Syracuse let-up last season. About an inefficient run game that ranked second worst in the nation. The senior guard has been bombarded with questions all spring and summer about the offensive line's sins in 2007.

WSOC | Fresh off Olympic gold, Whedden eyes success with Orange

By Meredith Galante

Phil Wheddon stood in a noise-filled Beijing locker room celebrating his second Olympic gold as assistant coach for the U.S. women's soccer team. Then, he received a phone call. The caller ID did not show who was calling, but he answered anyway. Through the background noise, Wheddon could hear the cheers of the Syracuse women's soccer team (1-0), congratulating its head coach on his victory.

FH | Transfer Taylor named captain in 1st season

By Conor Orr

Appointing a new player as a captain and team leader may be rare, but Syracuse field hockey head coach Ange Bradley knows from experience that Shannon Taylor is right for such a task. In a 2006 game with Taylor and Bradley riding a 45-game winning streak together at Richmond, the score was surprisingly tied against Temple.

Now or Never

Under Greg Robinson's watch, Syracuse football has hit new lows. But the head coach has one last chance to turn it around

By John Clayton

The framed photo sits in Daryl Gross' office on a shelf above his computer, partially hidden by a miniature statue of a Syracuse football player. It's a well-known shot. A window into a time three years ago when Syracuse football was something more than a punch line in Division I football.

Do you believe Delone Carter?

By Andy McCullough

You do not believe Delone Carter, not yet. Because you cannot believe what you cannot see, and you cannot see any of Delone Carter, at least not the parts that might make you believe. All you can see is the physical proof of his own belief - the 5-foot-10, 214 pound frame with arms that burst from underneath his shoulder pads and legs that his trainer compared to a lion's.

Reason to Smile

Don't let Art Jones' constant grin fool you. He knows the pressure is on him to lead the Orange defense

By Jared Diamond

Art Jones' teammates know that smile all too well. Jones' teeth stand out the most. They're big and bright, seemingly filling up his whole mouth, with a signature gap in the front proving the endless row of shiny whites eventually ends somewhere back there.

Drawing the Line

The Syracuse offensive line has been hit with it fair criticism. This year's group is eager to shed the negative reputation

By Bill Palka

Corey Chavers is tired of hearing the criticism cast upon the Syracuse offensive line. The senior offensive tackle has been part of an underachieving bunch. It has often been labeled as a big reason for the Orange's struggles during the Greg Robinson era.

Schonbrun: Low expectations might not be bad thing for SU

By Zach Schonbrun

In his T-shirt and trunks, Greg Robinson was the picture of positivism at his first Sunday press conference of the 2008 season, spreading a playful vibe that bordered on Jokerish jocularity. He played coy about the running back situation. He feigned ignorance about his record in season openers.

Southern Pride

With depth and a wealth of talent to recruit from, it's no wonder the Southeastern Conference has become the best football conference in the country

By Matt Ehalt

Conventional wisdom in college football says a two-loss team doesn't belong in the national championship game. But Charles Bloom knows the Southeastern Conference doesn't follow the same guidelines as most conferences. The associate commissioner of the SEC has seen over the past few years the conference become the best in the land.

History Lesson

Dave Wannstedt wants to bring back the glory days of Pittsburgh football. After a few stacked recruiting classes, this might be the year he finally does it

By Michael Bonner

Dave Wannstedt knows the Pittsburgh mentality. The Panthers' head coach grew up in Baldwin, Pa., a little more than eight miles from the Steel City. "Pittsburgh is a blue collar town, and I'd like to think that's the type of person I am in my background and my work ethic," Wannstedt said.
