Love perfection: The Decemberists new album, "The Hazards of Love" marks music evolution for the band
By Mary Cappabianca
Anticipation for The Decemberists' album "The Hazards of Love" has been intense, making even National Public Radio's Bob Boilen positively giddy. Fortunately, it lived up to the hype: "Hazards of Love" is an album of positively epic proportions, becoming the best album of the year so far - and that is no exaggeration.
Face the music
Big releases dropped this week in electronica, R&B and shoegaze. The D.O. staff reviews its favorites:
Artist: Dan Deacon Album: Bromst Genre: Electronica, avant-garde 45 Decibels "Bromst" sounds like video game rave music mixed with techno remixed nursery songs. Like Deacon's first experimental electronica album "Spiderman of the Rings" (2007), "Bromst" is upbeat and quirky, but lacks catchy tracks.
Review: Dan Deacon
By Christine Murnane
Artist: Dan Deacon Album: Bromst Genre: Dance, electronica Similar artists: 45 Decibels DZ Discovery Zone would've been the ideal setting to listen to Dan Deacon's newest album "Bromst." But alas, they no longer exist, so you'll need to settle for a sweaty rollick in a McDonald's Playplace ball pit instead.
Review: Lotus Plaza
By Eric Vilas-Boas
Artist: Lotus Plaza Album: The Floodlight Collective Genre(s): Ambient, Shoegaze Sounds Like: Deerhunter, My Bloody Valentine 75 Decibels Start off by admitting that a band like Deerhunter isn't everyone's cup of tea. Logically, we then make the assumption that Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt and his solo project Lotus Plaza are not for everyone either.
Review: MSTRKRFT
By Jett Wells
Artist: MSTRKRFT Album: Fist of God Genre(s): Dance, electronica Sounds like: Death From Above 1979 30 Decibels Although MSTRKRFT's genre is electro house, you can hardly call sophomore album "Fist of God" much of an album. Mind-numbing noise and poor sound mixing isn't an album to me.
Review: Keri Hilson
By Terron Moore
Artist: Keri Hilson Album: In A Perfect World Genre: Hip-hop, R&B Sounds like: Mary J. Blige, Ciara 85 Decibels You may not know Keri Hilson, but you know her music. Whether singing with Timbaland on 2007's "The Way I Are" or penning hits by artists like Ciara, Usher, Ludacris and Britney Spears, Hilson has always been behind the music scene.
