Syracuse police are investigating an allegation that an assistant coach on the men's basketball team molested a team ball boy for more than a dozen years.

Bernie Fine, an assistant who works with the SU frontcourt players, is alleged to have molested Bobby Davis, now 39 years old, beginning in 1984 when Davis was in seventh grade.

In light of the new allegations and the investigation, Syracuse University Athletic Director Daryl Gross, with a request by Chancellor Nancy Cantor, placed Fine on administrative leave, according to an email statement from the university by Kevin Quinn, senior vice president for public affairs.

In a statement issued Thursday night in an email, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim gave Fine his full support and said the allegations were unfounded.

"This matter was fully investigated by the University in 2005 and it was determined that the allegations were unfounded. I have known Bernie Fine for more than 40 years. I have never seen or witnessed anything to suggest that he would been involved in any of the activities alleged. Had I seen or suspected anything, I would have taken action. Bernie has my full support," he said.

When reached by phone, Boeheim declined to comment beyond the statement he released.

The abuse occurred at Fine's home, at the Syracuse basketball facilities and on road trips, according to an ESPN article.

A call to Fine's home was answered by an unidentified woman who said Fine is currently "out of town" and all comments from now on will have to be made through his attorney.

Davis reported the abuse to Syracuse police in 2003 but was told the statute of limitations had run out, according to the article. Dennis Duval, a former Syracuse basketball player, was the police chief at the time of the report.

An unidentified female answered the phone at Duval's home but said he was not home.

In a statement, Quinn said university officials launched their own investigation in 2005 after an adult male reported inappropriate conduct by an associate men's basketball coach to the Syracuse Police Department.

"On hearing of the allegations in 2005, the University immediately launched its own comprehensive investigation through its legal counsel. That nearly four-month long investigation included a number of interviews with people the complainant said would support his claims. All of those identified by the complainant denied any knowledge of wrongful conduct by the associate coach. The associate coach also vehemently denied the allegations," according to the statement.

In the statement, Quinn said if any evidence or corroboration of the allegations had surfaced, the university would have terminated the associate coach and reported it to the police immediately. The university will cooperate fully with the police, the statement said.

Calls to the Syracuse University athletic department were not immediately returned.

Scoop Jardine, a senior on the SU basketball team, answered his cellphone but said he could not comment on the allegations.

Calls to Syracuse police Sgt. Tom Connellan were deferred to later this evening.

Fine and Boeheim first met in 1963, when Fine was a student manager and Boeheim was a freshman on the basketball team. Fine graduated from Syracuse in 1967 and went into business for himself. In 1976, he was hired by Boeheim as an assistant coach.

Fine has been a part of the Syracuse basketball program since that point as a longtime assistant to Boeheim. He's been known to primarily work with SU's centers, mentoring SU greats such as Roosevelt Bouie, Rony Seikaly, Etan Thomas and Arinze Onuaku.

Sheesh. I wonder if Penn St. fans are posting on this site. I doubt SU students are flying off the handle and jumping to conclusions like the posters here.

An outside, third party needs to investigate both the Syracuse Police Department and Syracuse University. Clearly, the Syracuse PD can't be trusted. If they are investigating the allegations they will cover them up again and again. I hope the truth - whatever it may be - is shed. And if Fine is guilty I hope he rots in hell.

Wow, Nancy had her hands full in 2005. That's the same year she fired Frank Wilbur who was being investigated by the FBI. (See Post Standard front page article: "SU fires official investigated by FBI", 8/9/05.) BS&K also investigated. The Syracuse community deserves to know of "his conduct" that led to his firing and FBI investigation.

So Boeheim is going to keep covering up for Fine the Fondler? In 24 hours he's dragged Syracuse lower than Penn State in the national eye. The Orangemen are our nation's great shame...

The Bernie Fine story is tragic, no matter what. If he is innocent, he has been horribly wronged. If he is guilty, he must go in shame. We do not know, and must not assume we do.
BUT, there is a larger story here. Kevin Quinn said SU has a zero tolerance policy toward abuse of any kind, and would act appropriately in the face of allegations. He released this statement yesterday, the SAME day that David Potter disclosed that 3 years ago the administration tampered with the judicial process and even took police officers off the case when a complaint was brought against varsity athletes. What irony! Quinn's words are hollow given that there has already been wrongful coverup activity. T Callisto's reply to Potter is totally beside the point. What he said is true but irrelevant -- he totally avoids the central issue, that officers were ordered off the case. All that Potter says is true, so what Quinn says cannot be true.

It's amazing that SU alums who once lined up for hours and days to get the best seats in the Dome would start throwing Bernie under the Centro Bus 10 minutes after the story broke. You are trying Coach Fine in the court of public opinion even before the investigation gets underway. Understand that he is still innocent until proven guilty. Coach Fine has a family and friends. Pray for the victims, if these two men are victims. But also respect Coach Fine's privacy and personal life as well. So quick to jump on the band wagon to cheer him but you have just as quickly villified him. Shame.

Why on earth is Syracuse University allowing anyone of it's staff, professors or coaches take children, who are not theirs, on University trips for basketball games or whatever? This is going to be a major issue when the lawsuits begin and they will begin soon for SU.

i know the most important thing is the victims of abuse but for now i'd like to comment on the lead reporter, mark schwarz.i feel uneasy with his approach to this story like he's triing too hard to make it bigger. there is a chance this will be a duke lacrosse case more than a penn st.case. he's just a little over the top with his reporting in the early stages of this story.he's single handedly triing to put distance between the step brothers to ease concerns of a conspiracy. he's put words in the police dept. mouths to explain why this wasn't persued more in 2005 though he never interviewed them. and minimized the fact that the school jumped all over this when they first heard of it and when his own credible witnesses denied the allegations. so whats up schwarz? do you like the spotlight? i'm not saying bernie fine did or didn't do it. i just think you're looking for the big break and may be willing to bring down anyone, rightly or wrongly to get it. all that said i pray it's not true

How much embarrassment can Syracuse University take? Dropping like a rock in the ratings. Covering up a woman student's allegations about sexual assault and basketball players. Now Bernie Fine, the coach who runs the summer camps for young boys, accused of this.

Guarantee you one thing--you can scour every article in the media about this and the Penn State scandal, and even though the sex acts are homosexual, nowhere, not once, will the actual word "homosexual" be spoken about or written about. They are a protected class. Think about it!

Here we go again. Why would Boheim defend this psycho? Now there are 2 separate victims coming out. After seeing interviews on ESPN, both are credible, and both are, honestly, kind of weak, sad people -- entirely consistent with being victims of child abuse. If anything positive comes from this, it's that child abuse --the raping of little children -- is coming out into the open, and these sick, predatory psychopaths can be brought to justice. Disgusting. Clean this up, and Syracuse, better be ready for a PSU-style story. Boheim defending a molester... it's just sad.

This smells fishy. Bobby Davis was molested? You could certainly use that word to describe Davis as a teen, IF it's true. But as a 28 year old, he was still willingly "seeing" Bernie and being molested? I don't think molested is the proper word at 28 years old. A 28 year old is hardly a victim! So what is Davis's motivation now, after so many years as an adult, and still being "molested" for half of that adulthood? And the only other person to join the "get Bernie Fine" bandwagon is a relative of Davis. Hmmmm. A plot? Jimmy B. mentioned in one interview that Davis may be motivated by money. I agree, it does look to be a possibility. Bobby Davis may find himself a not-so-popular person in Syracuse area sports bars. And. God forbid, should Coach Boeheim get implicated in this, better watch your back, Bobby.

Boheim backing up Fine is a huge mistake, especially considering there is no sound evidence in either direction yet. "Knowing" someone for 40 years and not seeing anything is not proof that something has/ has not taken place.

The way JB has come out in defense of Bernie, especially on ESPN, is a definitely reassuring. I really hope Bernie is innocent and these accusers are just clowns. One thing is for sure... JB is going all in to back up Bernie.

Thanks for update. Nice to see 'Cuse is dealing with this promptly unlike PSU. Half of PSU's problem was they let their issue linger before taking action. With Newhouse, no surprise that 'Cuse's PR department is acting swiftly to take care of this matter.

Glad everyone got on the "how horrible PSU is" bandwagon. Here we go again! SU has allowed Bernie some priviledges over the years others have been not free to pursue. Big money, less over site. Let's hope he's not guilty.
