SPD identifies victim of Comstock crash as SU student, releases further details

The Syracuse Police Department identified the female struck by an Express Taxi cab Wednesday night as Syracuse University senior Maria Cristina Sanfeliu-Cruz.
Sanfeliu-Cruz, of Puerto Rico, remains in critical condition, according to a SPD press release. Sanfeliu-Cruz, 21, is a writing and rhetoric major and scheduled to graduate this May.
Police responded to a call Wednesday that a pedestrian had been hit by a car at approximately 10 p.m. on the 700 block of Comstock Avenue. Upon arrival, police found Sanfeliu-Cruz had sustained a head injury and was immediately driven by a Rural Metro ambulance to Upstate University Hospital, according to the release.
Hussein Mumin, 32, of Syracuse was identified as the driver of the cab, a 2002 Mercury Sedan, according to the release. Mumin was traveling southbound on Comstock Avenue as Sanfeliu-Cruz crossed the street westbound. He was given a field sobriety test when police arrived.
The accident is still under investigation and no tickets have been issued, according to the release.
